What's the old saying....the only thing worse than never attaining your dream...is attaining it and finding out...its not its all cracked up to be. Believe me if you grow up as a sports fan in the state of Michigan...playing or coaching for the Wolverines is the ultimate dream of many...few are called, less are chosen...and then there are the rare few who are selected and say....ehhh..and that in a nutshell is Kevin Borseth.
MAINO: Just watching him during a green bay women's game...you see the passion and his devotion to green bay basketball....this from a man who grew up in a state where the first words of many are.
BORSETH; "In Michigan? Go Blue"
MAINO: The maize and blue of the wolverine state...but a women's basketball program that had fouderend near the bottom of the big 10 before Borseths arrival....he led them to an 87-73 mark and three post season bids.....in fact it wasn't long before they found it he took things a little more seriously than his predecessors.
BORSETH....."It was one thing wanted to do...I said I had two jobs that i wanted, one was Notre Dame and the other was Michigan, because I grew up idolizing those two programs, we were exposed to those from the U.P., having a dream to do that was a dream come true, but been there, done that...got my t-shirt.
MAINO Now back to an area that he realizes is his real home...even though its not his home state....
BORSETH; I was riding over here...with one of my counterparts and we were talking about yoopers and we are kind of a different breed...but there are alot of us that hang around the green bay area we can all think and act the same if you will.....I just missed it back here.....I like the people back here I like the atmosphere, it just felt a lot more like home to me
MAINO: The only major frustration that comes with Green Bay basketball despite the amazing success....they just can't seem to get the notoriety that success would seem to warrant.....
BORSETH; I was talking to one of the coaches from Ferris State university and I had taken the drive over here obviously in Green Bay, we were talking about it..and she said, well how is the program over there....and I kind of looked at her like you're a basketball coach, what rock did you crawl out from underneath....program here is very good, the last five years obviously, competed in four ncaa tournaments, sweet 16 I though people would know that.
MAINO....Maybe its that lack of notoriety and respect that helps fuel the players who keep this program at the level it continually sits...
BORSETH: I think our players come in and I think alot of times they don't get the notoriety perhaps that some of the kids that go to big schools do, blue collar workers, carry a lunch pail if you will , our kids go everyday and they lace them up, they play extremely hard, I don't know if its a chip on their shoulder but I think they feel like they have to play a little better when they play against those schools and they generally do.
