NEW HOLSTEIN-- 18-year-old Monica Batts was found dead in a backyard near New Holstein Friday. Police are considering her death suspicious until an autopsy can determine the exact cause of death.
The teen was found almost 2 miles from her New Holstein home. Police aren't sure how she got there or long she was dead before she was discovered. The man who lives at the home on County Highway X found her lying behind his home. Batts was fully clothed and there were no obvious signs of trauma. Police say he did not know the victim and has been cooperating with police. He is not considered a suspect.
Her father Dennis is in shock over her death.
"When your daughter in good health and stuff and all of sudden you get the news that they found her dead you know, the only thing now is waiting for answers to find out what happened, " said Dennis Batts.
Dennis last saw his daughter Sunday. Her family has been trying to reach her for several days with no answer. Batts says that type of behavior was not typical for his daughter.
"Monday, went by, then Tuesday and Wednesday and then we knew something was wrong because she always would come back home,” Batts said.
Close friend Justin Nett is also looking for answers about Batt's death. Nett is a hip-hop artist. He is working on a song and a benefit concert to help Monica's family. "Mind blowing and shocking that something like this can happen out of nowhere," Nett said.
The Calumet County Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation.
"We are following up on some things that we found such as footprints in a nearby field we haven't determined yet whether they are her footprints or not so we're not sure how she arrived at that residence,” said Lt. Mark Weigert.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Fond du Lac County.
