GREEN BAY-- Hundreds came out to Austin Straubel International Airport for a glimpse at one of the world's biggest airplanes. A cargo jet carrying equipment from Germany touched down in Green Bay, making it the largest airplane to ever land here.
With a wing span of 240 feet, it' wider than Austin Straubel's runway, creating a logistical challenge for crews as they landed and unloaded the plane.
The Antonov 124 is carrying more than 100,000 pounds of equipment from Germany. The parts are heading to Marinette for construction of the USS Milwaukee.
The airport learned of the landing 2 weeks ago.
"We needed to arrange a lot of logistics, we needed to get semis here cranes here forklifts, all kinds of equipment, catering, hotel rooms, catering, all things that they required, fueling obviously,” said Jet Air The Anotov 124 holds 70,000 gallons of fuel. It will need 45,000 gallons before taking off again, making it the largest fuel order ever filled at Austin Straubel airport.
The airport's largest fuel truck needs 9 trips just to fill the plane's fuel tanks. The Antonov will be in Green Bay until 2:00 p-m Sunday.
