After days of canvassing, Democratic State Senator Jessica King concedes her re-election race.
Republican Rick Gudex was originally ahead by 590 votes out of more than 85,000 cast. But canvassing around District 18 has him pulling-in even more votes. District 18 covers Winnebago, Fond Du Lac and part of Dodge County.
"I think everybody was kind of waiting, sitting back to see what we were going to end up with," Winnebago County Clerk Sue Ertmer said.
The guessing game is over for Ertmer.
"Rick Gudex gained 21 votes and Jessica King gained 18," Ertmer said.
Those numbers were just in Winnebago County alone.
"We take the results tapes and the poll books, verify the number of voters and number of ballots cast," Ertmer said.
No word how much King and Gudex gained in Fond Du Lac and Dodge Counties yet, but the results so far were enough for King to concede.
She emailed us a statement that reads, "I want to congratulate Senator-Elect Rick Gudex on his election to the state Senate and hope all of our newly elected officials will work for the best interest of the state."
"I'm obviously pleased we officially have the win now," Rick Gudex told us over the phone.
Gudex says he was confident the numbers wouldn't lie.
"We kind of knew the night of the election it's an uphill battle to find the number of votes she would have needed to win the race," Gudex said.
A race that Ertmer says could've cost the county a lot more than her time.
"It'll save Winnebago County between 4 to $5,000 not having to conduct another recount," Ertmer said.
Dodge County's canvass will begin Wednesday morning. All counties in District 18 have until next week to report their official results to the Government Accountability Board.
