GREEN BAY - For many students, summer is a time to put classes on hold. But some dedicated high schoolers from all across Wisconsin are flocking to UW Green Bay this summer to focus on their love of art.
From painting, to drawing, to ceramics, to sewing – there’s something for everyone at UW Green Bay’s High School Summer Art Studio.
"Mostly, it's just a learning experience. You know, meeting new people.. learning new techniques.. just everything,” said art student Amber Brown.
"From the moment they hit the front door, they are at work. They are very, very interested.. they are very dedicated.. and they are incredible to work with,” said Sandra Shackelford, the Summer Art Studio’s Co-Director.
Instructors say the camps are a way for students who are interested in the arts to delve even deeper, while meeting others who share their passion.
"It's a nice break from a normal summer. You get to go a week from home, you get to spend time on your own -- and you meet new people and you learn things from those people and the teachers. It's just a great way to express yourself. It's really nice,” said art student Alex Melichar.
Many students hope to use their creative side to build successful careers.
"I actually want to go to college - either Oshkosh or here in Green Bay - to become a graphic artist and bring art into my career and making my living off of that,” Melichar said.
UW Green Bay also offers summer camps focusing on music, sports and science. Many students say the camps are something they look forward to each and every year.
