GREEN BAY, Wis.--The Green Bay Police Department Dive Team has raised a car to the surface of the Fox River near Cherry Street in the community's downtown district. The next step is to transport the vehicle to a storage area where it can be inspected.
The dive team used airbags to lift the car, said to be buried in the riverbed, covered with silt.
The JF Brennan Crew, a contractor for the Fox River cleanup, found the car in about 18 feet of water by using sonar equipment and were able to take pictures to give to the Harbor Patrol and dive team.
Visibility near the vehicle is near zero, but a dive team was able to retrieve a piece of the vehicle's license plate. That plate is said to be from Minnesota.
According to police, the vehicle has been in the Fox River for a long period of time, anywhere from ten to 30 years.
