CAMPBELLSPORT - Two teens have been arrested after a little girl was shot with an arrow in Campbellsport.
The arrow hit 7-year-old Aryanna Schneeberg in the back on May 21. Investigators say a 16-year-old boy and his friend were aiming at a squirrel. The teens say they heard the girl scream, but did not go for help because they were afraid of getting in trouble.
"One confessed to shooting the arrow, and the other one was a witness," said Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink.
The 16-year-old told police he fired the arrow from the deck of an upper apartment unit.
"They basically said that they shot an arrow at a squirrel and the arrow impacted the child. At that point, they heard the child scream.. and obviously they were afraid to come forward," Fink said.
Police say the teens only confessed after being interviewed for a second time.
"The best way I can put it was a gut feeling that something wasn't right. They felt that they needed to go back and re-interview these guys," said Lt. Cameron McGee.
Doctors at Children's Hospital performed emergency surgery to remove the arrow, and Aryanna is now safe at home with her family. Police say it's resolution to what could have been a tragic story.
"If you keep the pressure out there in the press, we certainly can - at some point - bring these things to a successful resolution, and I'm hoping that's exactly what we have here," said Fink.
