Partners in Education: Bald is Beautiful

By NBC26 News Team. CREATED Mar 19, 2012

Presented by Shopko Foundation:

Green Bay, WI - Chances are, you or someone you know has been diagnosed with cancer. Now, some brave students at Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay are making a big statement to help fight the disease.

Freshman Grace Cirriveau and sophomore Genesis Huete are both students at Notre Dame Academy, and participants in the fight against cancer.

"My aunt died from cancer two years ago, and my grandpa died three months ago. It was a hard time," said Grace.

The girls are part of a number of students who decided to shave their heads for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. It's a charity committed to finding a cure for childhood cancer and honoring people like Todd Darrow, who bravely shared about his current battle with cancer on Friday.

"I've seen people go through suffering so much, and then people who don't have hair are wishing they did. So, I just want to put out there that hair isn't all that important," said Genesis.

This year, students at Notre Dame raised more than $12,000 for the cause. Grace and Genesis were a big part of that effort.

When it comes to parting with their hair, both girls say it's a small price to pay to make a difference in the lives of others.

"It doesn't matter what people think about you. Just don't care if they judge you," said Grace.

"I think they should go ahead and do it, because it's for an amazing cause, and you'll just feel great about it," said Genesis.

The girls say they hope to prove to everyone that bald is beautiful.
