Giraffe killed while being transported in open-air truck

By Phyllis Stark. CREATED Aug 3, 2014

South Africa’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has announced plans to sue those responsible for the cruel death of a giraffe last week, claiming the parties transporting the animal in an open-air truck were negligent. The giraffe died when its head was smashed on a highway overpass as the truck drove underneath. The giraffe is believed to have died instantly.

Another giraffe on the same truck survived, and has been nicknamed “Lucky.”

The giraffes were on their way to a game farm about 99 miles outside Johannesburg when the incident occurred, according to the Huffington Post, citing the BBC as its source.

“On Thursday, several eyewitnesses posted photographs on Twitter of the giraffe before its death,” the Huffington Post reports. “Many Twitter users have noted that the incident is similar to a scene in ‘The Hangover Part III’ in which a giraffe gets decapitated after hitting its head on a bridge.”
