Springfield, MO (July 12, 2013) Children and families in need of back-to-school assistance for the upcoming school year are encouraged to seek help from The Salvation Army.

Each year, The Salvation Army’s back-to-school assistance program helps local children in need by providing them with basic school supplies, backpacks, clothing, shoes and haircuts. Assistance is available for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade who live in Greeneand Christian counties.

“Our hope is to not only ease the financial burden placed on many families during this time of year, but to also give children the confidence they need in order to learn and succeed,” Major Claire Grainger, Springfield Corps Officer, said.

Families can sign up for assistance July 15th through July 26th, Monday through Friday, from 10 am until 3 pm & on Monday evenings from 5 pm until 7 pm. The Salvation Army is located at 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway.

To sign up for assistance a picture ID, social security card for everyone in the household, proof of income & proof of residency such as a piece of mail received within the last twelve months are all required.

“We hope that the assistance we provide helps level the playing field for these children,” Grainger said. “While we can’t supply everything, we can help with the very basics and for a majority of these children the very basic items are all that they’ll have.”

Last year, The Salvation Army provided back-to school assistance for more than 1,000 local children and anticipates helping many more this year.

But helping so many requires the help of many others. Numerous volunteers are needed from Saturday August 3rd through Monday August 5th to help pack backpacks, sort school supplies and act as personal ‘shopping buddies’ for the children & families receiving assistance.

In addition to volunteers, school supplies and new or gently-used children’s clothing – especially boy’s clothing – are also needed.
