Patrol: More Drownings This Year Than In All Of Last Year

CREATED Jul. 5, 2013

(MissouriNET) - Ahead of a busy holiday weekend on the water, The Highway Patrol cautions that drownings have been way up this year, already topping last year's 20.

Captain Tim Hull says virtually all drownings are preventable, and says a life jacket can be a life-line for people, whether they can swim or not.

"It's really important for people that can't swim -or somebody who's unsteady on their feet- when they're in and around water, to make sure they have a life jacket on because a life jacket will float. They won't."

Hull says a life jacket in and on the water is equal to wearing a seatbelt while in a car.
