You don't have to look far on the Missouri State University campus to find the name "Hammons".
University president Cliff Smart says that's because John Q. Hammons was the school's largest benefactor.
"There a multiple facilities on campus that bare his name, most notably the Q, a piece of his legacy for us is that great facility," Smart told KTTS News.
Belief In MSU Allowed University To Expand
"It was his belief in the university, that it could be more than Southwest Missouri State and could be a national university, Cliff said, "he wanted us to be successful academically, in sports, in arts, and he proved that belief by his great generosity."
Smart says he left MSU with the spirit to be better.
Hammons Was A "Difference Maker"
"He was a real difference maker for the university and many other organizations in town," Smart said.
The school president says it's also a confidence for students and staff when they see that level of commitment.
