The Republic fire department would have the money it needs to buy new fire trucks and equipment if voters say yes to a 1/8-cent sales tax on the April ballot.
Fire chief Duane Compton says the sales tax would have a 15-year sunset.
Compton says the department wouldn't get everything it needs right away.
He says it has a plan to buy things when the money is there -- without going into debt.
Compton says the upgrades are needed.
The last time Republic bought a fire truck was 1995.
But the city has grown 74% since the 2000 census.
