TANEYVILLE, Mo. (AP) - The head of a small southwest Missouri school district is expressing dismay over an ornament of a black child that someone left hanging outside a school.

KYTV reports the principal of Taneyville School discovered the item hanging from the entryway Tuesday morning and took it down.

Taneyville School District superintendent Grant Boyer sent a letter home to parents about the incident Tuesday.

Boyer described it as a yard statue-type ornament of a young African-American boy fishing. The Taney County Sheriff's Department took custody of the item and believes it was stolen from someone's yard.

The Taneyville district has 185 students. There are few African-American students in the district, and none at the K-through-eight school where the item was left.
