Spring Valley speech and debate program wows judges

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- If you want to be encouraged about the next generation, just show up at a speech and debate tournament. We recently visited the speech and debate program at Spring Valley High School where students are out thinking, out talking, out debating most adults we know.

Inside the speech and debate class at Spring Valley High school, you'll be educated.

Coach Nick Sevano says, "Once they get a taste and see what these kids are capable of they say I can't believe kids are speaking on topics that are so complex.  And thoughtfully, critically, so well spoken."

Sevano is the coach of this award-winning team.  For years, he's trained students to do what makes most of us break out in a cold sweat.  "They put themselves out there all the time and take really big risks. intellectually, emotionally, psychologically and they come out the other end feeling like they've really grown quite a bit."

Part of the fun with forensics is that there are lots of different events the students specialize in. For example McKenzie specializes in impromptu which means he gets a subject and has just 2 minutes to gather thoughts, create a mental plan, and deliver a 5 minute speech. The topic we gave him?  Star Wars.

"The story of Star Wars is so much more than a science fiction action-packed film, but rather the story teaches us moral lessons about ourselves."

Mackenzie makes it look easy. But we all know it is anything but.  Still, students like Shelby say it's a rush.  "I don't think they know how much fun we have. We have a lot of fun in here and it goes along with a lot of hard work. It's a lifestyle. It's not a class anymore. It becomes part of who you are, really."

If you want to check out what these kids can do, the state tournament is taking place March 14 and 15 at Green Valley High School.  They welcome anyone to come watch or even help judge the competition.
