Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- This is National Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week. Chances are pretty good you know a child with a heart defect.
One in 100 kids is born with a heart problem these days. Kids like baby Jett. He will steal your heart, but it's his heart that's had doctors worried since he was just three days old.
Tyson Kindred is Jett's dad, "Oh man. Being my first kid, I didn't expect anything like this. I've never heard of this stuff so for him to come in and tell us this stuff, it was heartbreaking."
Jett's heart had four different defects. He's already had one open-heart surgery and he'll need more procedures. That's why the Children's Heart Foundation exists, to offer support to families like his. Mom Lavey Kindred said, "When you're first told, a bomb gets dropped on you and everything runs through your mind."
Knowing how important that support is, the owners of Gimme Some Sugar bake shop wanted to donate 15-percent of its sales to the Children's Heart Foundation.
Ashley Mastowki is one of the owners who said pediatric heart patients are tough, "They are the most resilient kids you'll ever meet. They love life. They are fun to be around."
Gimme Some Sugar specializes in custom cakes. They recently expanded to add the bake shop, which sells custom deserts and wine. "We though it would be great pairing for Valentine's day. We thought it would be a perfect match."
Now when you enjoy their tasty treats, you can also enjoy knowing you're helping children like Jett. The benefit runs through Sunday, Feb. 16.
