Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- Our own Foothill High School marching band will be performing in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, one of only six high schools in the program. As if that's not enough, they'll also perform at Carnegie Hall.
The application process is grueling. But what started with an online application two years ago and then video submissions, reference letters and awards is ending with the sweet sound of success.
Director of bands Travis Pardee said, "There's a small percentage people who can say they performed in the Macy's parade and Carnegie Hall. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
There are a few keys to this program's success. For one thing, the directors split their time between Foothill and the middle schools that feed it. The result? Students get the same world class instruction for 7 years.
Now Pardee said the band is raising money, hoping not to leave a single member behind, "It's $2,000 a student. We would love to not price out students. Not everyone can write a check for $2,000."
Students like Faith Thompson said the band is tight knit and that's part of why they are so successful too, "We have a really strong friendship among all of the members and we have a lot of fun."
Whatever their formula, it's working. Students like Nikko Lopez said they'll be ready, "We're going to work hard. Be prepared. I'm not worried about that as much as marching 3 miles in 20 degree weather. I'm worried about that, I guess."
To get the entire band to New York, the price tag is $800,000. The fundraising is underway. If you'd like to help, give Foothill High School a ring.
