Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Students in Las Vegas had the need for speed on Saturday.

The Nevada Science Bowl Middle School Car Races were held.

Dozens of local students tested their engineering and science skills with model cars.

The track was laid out at the National Atomic Testing Museum. Students were given electric motors, a lithium ion battery and a battery charger.

The rest of the design was up to them and their research.

Students competed for $1,500 in prize money for the math or science departments at their school.
