#BeAHeroWeek initiative finds homes for 180 at-risk dogs

The Animal Foundation's #BeAHeroWeek initiative, which ended Sunday, found homes for 180 at-risk dogs and temporarily eased capacity challenges at Nevada's largest animal shelter and pet adoption center.

The shelter, which had reached capacity in its dog adoption centers, faced the sad reality of making euthanasia decisions to create space for the new animals entering its care if adopters were not quickly found.

The weeklong initiative offered reduced adoption fees of $40 for all Pit Bulls and Chihuahuas; the two breeds at greatest risk for humane euthanasia.

Throughout the initiative, 59 Pit Bulls and 121 Chihuahuas found loving, forever homes. In total, 298 dogs found forever homes during the initiative.

Without a steady stream of adoptions, the shelter could be facing space challenges again very soon. The Animal Foundation takes in more than 110 new animals every day. Currently, more than 250 dogs are available for adoption.

The Animal Foundation operates two adoption centers, the Campus Adoption Center in Las Vegas and the PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center in Henderson. Adoption fees for all dogs and cats include spay/neuter surgery, microchip, uptodate vaccines, and more.
