7-Eleven selling 50-cent coffee to celebrate to-go cup anniversary

In case you missed it, 7-Eleven is celebrating it's 50th anniversary with 50-cent coffee nationwide through Sept. 14.

Fifty years ago, 7-Eleven became the first national retailer to offer fresh-brewed coffee in to-go cups.

7-Eleven is also taking the opportunity to kick off its "Every 7th Cup Free" coffee-rewards program through its 7-Eleven mobile app.

Customers can download the app in the iTunes App Store or Google Play and register. Every time a customer buys a cup of coffee, a cashier will scan a bar code in the app, which will automatically punch a digital rewards card. After receiving six punches, the customer will receive a coupon for a free cup through the mobile app.

Before 1964, coffee-drinkers would either drink coffee at home or in a restaurant. The first to-go cup of coffee was sold by a 7-Eleven in Long Island, New York. Today, 7-Eleven sells more than 1.1 million cups each day.

All coffee blends are made from 100 percent Arabica beans and custom roasted for 7-Eleven. Several quality checks during the roasting process ensure a high quality product.  A typical store will serve several varieties during peak coffee sales times between 6 and 10 a.m., but can brew a fresh batch at a customer’s request any time of day.

Coffee is the top-selling, self-serve beverage at 7-Eleven stores. 7-Eleven sells more than twice as much coffee as any of its other proprietary beverages.
