The secret lives of sharks revealed

By Phyllis Stark. CREATED Feb 28, 2014

Researchers at the University of Hawaii and the University of Tokyo say they are the first to outfit sharks with sensors and video cameras to learn what sharks are up to in the ocean. A fin-mounted sensor and videocamera rig is giving those researchers their first look at just what sharks really do all day.

The biologists say the sensor and camera pack work like a flight data recorder for sharks, showing they do more high powered swimming than previously thought. They treat their little corner of the sea as sort of a roller rink, swimming in repetitive loops around the ocean floor. Researchers also learned that sharks of different species swim together in schools.
The scientists say the data will help with shark conservation efforts and improve ocean public safety.
