A tradition that began in 1984, MTV Networks is gearing up for the 30th MTV Video Music Awards, to be televised live tonight (Aug. 24) at 9/8c. However, the show is already making headlines for accidents behind-the-scenes during rehearsals and pre-parties.
A dancer for "Anaconda" singer Nicki Minaj was bitten on the inside of her left arm by a six-foot-long Dumeril's boa constrictor while onstage Friday during show rehearsals.
According to Chris Velvin, director of production safety for MTV parent Viacom Media Networks, "The snake’s handler from Hollywood Animals said it had never had a biting incident before, and though its bite is non-venomous, the medic cleaned and treated the wound because with any bite there is a chance of infection," reports MTV News.
“It is in no way life-threatening, but scary,” Velvin details to MTV News. “We wanted her to start getting treatment as soon as possible.”
The dancer was transported to a local hospital as "an abundance of caution," MTV News further reports. A different snake will be used during the live broadcast.
With seven VMA nominations under her belt, "Fancy" singer Iggy Azalea was another injury on Friday while performing at an MTV Video Music Awards benefit concert.
While backing up while dancing, Azalea fell off of the stage at the Avalon in Los Angeles. "Security guards quickly pulled Azalea back onto the stage, and she barely missed a beat as Charli XCX joined her for the chart-topping single," reports People.
"Afterward Azalea told the crowd she felt 'very blessed' that she did not break her legs," People details.
It remains unconfirmed whether Azalea received medical care after her fall.
