New trial ordered for Mississippi mother who spent 14 years on death row
Michelle Byrom, 57, is awaiting a new trial after spending about 14 years on death row.
"The Mississippi Supreme Court reversed her capital murder conviction on March 31 and ordered a new trial," reports CNN. "Byrom was sentenced to death in 2000 after a jury determined she was the mastermind of a murder-for-hire plot to kill her allegedly abusive husband."
However, "Her son wrote in jailhouse letters that he committed the crime, and according to court documents, told a court-appointed psychologist that he was culprit."
A new trial date has not yet been set. Byrom is currently being held under the original capital murder indictment until officials resume the investigation, but she has been moved from Mississippi state prison to the Tishomingo County jail.
