Deadly shooting in California leaves seven dead, seven hospitalized

By Phyllis Stark. CREATED May 24, 2014

Seven people are dead and seven more are hospitalized in California after a gunman described by authorities as “a madman” went on a shooting rampage Friday night. The gunman himself is one of the dead, killed by a gunshot wound to the head. He is believed to have taken his own life.

Authorities are calling the incident “a premeditated mass murder” and called the shooter “severely mentally disturbed.” They are investigating nine separate crime scenes from the 10 minute shooting spree, which began at 9:27 p.m. at a deli where people were eating outside.

The killer, who may have been seeking retribution, shot from a slow-moving black BMW with tinted windows as he drove through the college town of Isla Vista, near the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. One woman on a bicycle was reportedly struck by the shooter’s car and sustained massive head trauma, according to KEYT.

The gunman has been identified as 22-year-old Elliot Rodger (pictured above), a student at Santa Barbara City College. His father is a Hollywood filmmaker.

Prior to the shooting, police say a young man, believed to be the gunman, posted a YouTube video titled “Retribution” which they’re describing as a “manifesto” that warns of the killing spree to come. The Santa Barbara County sheriff's office is also analyzing some unspecified written evidence as well.

“In the nearly seven-minute video, the young man rants about women who ignored or rejected him over the past eight years and warns that he will ‘punish you all for it … Tomorrow is the day of retribution, the day in which I will have my revenge,’ the man says on the video,” CNN reports.

The seven people hospitalized are being treated for “gunshot wounds or traumatic injuries,” CNN reports. At least one is believed to have life-threatening injuries.

A semiautomatic handgun was recovered from the scene. Police say the Rodger acted alone.
