North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - The sun can be brutal here in the valley, especially in the summer. So one North Las Vegas couple decided to invest in a major home improvement project. But when they didn't get what they paid for, they reached out to Contact 13's Call For Action volunteers. Action News anchor Tricia Kean reports.
"We heard that it would help cut down the heat," says Les Rogers.
He and his wife just moved into their new home last year. To help conserve energy the couple decided to buy sun shades for their windows. So Les called a company, who sent out a representative to look at the house windows, and provide an estimate.
"He talked and joked and he was very friendly you know," says Les.
He was told the sun shades would cost him $1,500 and he agreed to pay half of that, $750, up front.
"But after he left the whole thing changed," says Les.
He says they cashed his check, but no one ever showed up to measure his windows, as scheduled. When he made a call, he was told someone would be out the very next day.
"Another week went by and nobody, you know, nothing happened," says Les.
He says he made another call and someone finally came out to measure the windows. Les says he was told a couple guys would be out a week later to install the shades, but that never happened. So he made another phone call.
"He said well, we had a problem at the factory and we're not going to be able, so we'll get back to you," says Les.
He says days went by with no word. He tried calling several times, but says the voicemail was full, and he couldn't leave a message.
"By then I just said well, let me try Channel 13," says Les.
Our Call for Action volunteers made a call to the company, and Les saw quick results.
"That same evening they called me back and said they'd be out the next day and put them in," says Les.
He says they had the shades completely installed the follwing day, and says he's shocked with the results.
"I said wow. So you guys got, they pay attention when you all, when 13 speaks," says Les.
So here's the Contact 13 bottom line. When hiring a company or contractor for a job at your home: always get 3 references, and review their past work. And get at least 3 bids. Also, get a written contract, and don't sign it until you understand all the terms.
But if you still need help, we're only a phone call away. Contact our Call for Action volunteers at (702) 368-2255, anytime between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. For Contact 13, I'm Tricia Kean.
