Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- You're a winner. Words that grab anyone's attention, and that's exactly what scam artists are counting on.
"You won $2.3 million in Mega Millions and you won a free car," said Patricia Torres.
She said she couldn't believe what she heard when she picked up the phone, "I said well, what did I enter? And he says well, there's several different ways you could have entered."
The caller didn't have the exact details on how she won, but Patricia said he knew everything else, "He not only knew my name, I mean Patricia Torres, there are a couple other Patricia Torres in this town, but he knew my middle initial. He knew my address. He knew my home phone number."
She said the caller was very convincing. But it was his next question that really bothered her, "He wanted my birth date, and he wanted my cell phone number."
She said he wanted that information, in order to verify her identity. But first, she wanted to know how to collect her winnings. Patricia was told she'd have to wire a $500 payment first, in order to cover the taxes from the prize money.
"He just soothed me on everything you know. He goes, you don't have to worry about anything. We're gonna give that back to you when you get your money," said Patricia.
But she said she knew it was a scam. So after she got off the phone, she called Contact 13. We've reported before, wiring services like MoneyGram and Western Union say never wire money to someone you don't know.
Patricia warns, don't fall for a smooth talker, "You just don't give out information over the phone. No matter how much they have."
So here's the Contact 13 bottom line: You can't win a lottery or contest you didn't enter. Here in Nevada, remember, there is no lottery.
Contact 13 called Mega Millions lottery officials in California, who confirm they don't call lottery winners. They'll never ask you to pay any fee, before collecting your prize.
