Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Contact 13 continues to track the progress of animals rescued from the now-shuttered Las Vegas Zoo.

Fat and happy. That's how Katz, the former zoo's cougar, is being described by his owners.

The cougar was under-nourished when he first came from the zoo to a Pahrump home, run by the Rexano Foundation.

Since then, founder Scott Shoemaker said Katz has gained quite a bit of weight, purrs for attention and pets through the fence and loves to play with toys.

The Las Vegas Zoo shut down in September after the zookeeping staff quit, saying the owner wouldn't allow them to properly care for or feed the animals.
