Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Imagine how frustrating it is when your garage door won't open, or maybe the gate into your community isn't working properly.
One Valley man faced a four-month long battle, every time he came home.
"It's very difficult for me to, as you can see, my left arm does not work at all," said Jerry Marks.
He said all he wanted to do was get home. The problem is, he lives in a gated community and can't raise his arm high enough out his driver door, to punch in an access code.
"I hurt everyday from this thing, but that was my main problem, I couldn't do it," said Jerry.
So for 12 years, he's had a special clicker that opens the gate into his private Henderson community.
"Three management companies that I remember, and never a problem until this latest company came in," said Jerry.
He said when the new management company took over back in April, his clicker stopped working. So he contacted them right away.
"I tried to explain it to those folks, and it didn't seem to matter," said Jerry.
After countless phone calls and a couple visits to their office, he sent a certified letter. But Jerry said he still couldn't get any help.
"If I had a clicker in hand, which meant I paid for it, it's mine, homeowners buy clickers, it's theirs. Why you even questioning me? Get me another clicker," said Jerry.
So after four months of having to get out of his car to open his gate, every time he came home, he finally decided to pick up the phone.
Our Call for Action volunteers got on the case, and it wasn't long before Jerry got the help he needed from the property manager.
"I finally got an email, we'll be more than happy to give you your clicker," said Jerry.
He now has a working gate clicker, and he couldn't be happier.
"I really did not appreciate months and months of this. If you don't see a response, obviously you've got Channel 13," said Jerry.
So here's the contact 13 bottom line: Make sure to always put any requests to a property manager or HOA in writing. That way you have written proof. You can also file a complaint with the Nevada Real Estate Division.
