North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A kitchen makeover typically makes life a little easier. But one Valley homeowner says her experience has been a horror story, to the tune of $13,000. So with no where else to turn, she called Contact 13's Call for Action volunteers for help.
"It was just wonderful. It was like a whole weight being lifted off my heart," says Sheila Gallagher.
The North Las Vegas homeowner is wearing a big smile these days. She says contact 13 came to her rescue.
"Just amazing," says Sheila.
But things were very different a few months ago.
"I was crying everyday. I was upset," says Sheila.
Sheila hired a local company back in May, to remodel her kitchen. The work is supposed to make it more accessible for her husband, who suffers from a brain disease, which has taken his ability to walk.
"I wanted to adapt the kitchen, so he could go out of the kitchen and into the kitchen in his wheelchair," says Sheila.
Sheila paid the company an up front fee of more than $13,000, for brand new cabinets. But there were some issues. Take a look at these pictures. They show these cabinets were poorly installed, and damaged. And Sheila says they were the completely wrong cabinets. She had ordered ones made of solid wood. But these were made with fiberboard and vinyl.
"So if he were to rub up against it with his wheelchair, it would tear, and they're not repairable," says Sheila.
So she called the company right away. In the beginning, she says they had plenty of excuses, telling her the contractor would come and fix everything. But days went by, and then weeks, with no help.
"It's been a nightmare. I mean look at it, it's terrible... My health has suffered. And my temper has suffered," says Sheila.
That's when she decided to pick up the phone, and reach out to our Contact 13 Call for Action volunteers. And she says, she got fast action.
"Five minutes later. After months of, literally 5 minutes later, I got a call from the company... They said we're going to give you back all your money, and we're going to send somebody to remove the cabinets," says Sheila.
She got her $13,000 back. She's used that money to hire a new company, and is excited about getting the kitchen done. Sheila says her only regret is not calling sooner.
"Call Channel 13 immediately... I can't even tell you, I was crying with happiness that day. I was astounded. The whole family was astounded," says Sheila.
I'm so glad we were able to help Sheila and her husband. So here's the contact 13 bottom line. Sheila paid this company up front for her new cabinets. But the Nevada State Contractors Board suggests you only agree to pay a company installments, as the work is done.
If you have an issue with a company doing any sort of remodel, you can file a complaint with the Contractors Board. And don't forget, when all else fails, we've got your back Las Vegas. Contact our Call for Action volunteers at 368-2255, anytime between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
