Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- You're pre-approved. Famous words we see on credit card offers all the time. But one Valley woman says she has regrets, and that's when she reached out to Contact 13's Call for Action unit for help.
"They didn't care. You have to be careful when you're dealing with the credit card companies," says Roberta Gilliard.
She decided to fill out an application back in January, for a pre-approved credit card offer. But by the time it arrived in the mail, she says she had changed her mind.
"I decided that, I said, well I'm not gonna keep it. So I called them up. And I was asking them some questions," says Roberta.
To her surprise, she learned she had a balance that needed to be paid.
"They closed the account, but I'm still being charged the $75," says Roberta.
It turns out, it was for an annual membership fee. Roberta says it didn't seem fair that she should have to pay, when she hadn't even activated the card.
"Those are companies that have billions and billions of dollars. And to try and take it from the little people like us, it's not fair," says Roberta.
So she picked up the phone.
"I said well, they won't listen to me, I know somebody who will help me out. And I called Channel 13," says Roberta.
Our Call for Action volunteers contacted the credit card company, which agreed to drop the charges. Roberta says it may not seem like much, but saving her 75 dollars is a big deal for her.
"I'm happy that Channel 13 is out there to fight for people like me, and all the other ones that can't get nothing done when we try and do it on our own," says Roberta.
So here's the Contact 13 bottom line. Make sure you really want a credit card before you apply, because closing an account could hurt your credit score.
And always read the fine print. Not all credit cards have an annual fee, but it's common with premium and reward credit cards.
And remember, we've got your back Las Vegas. If you feel you're not being fairly treated, give us a call. Contact our Call for Action volunteers at 368-2255, anytime between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. For Channel 13 Action News, I'm Tricia Kean.
