Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Valley residents are contacting Action News about a letter sent out to some homeowners offering a warranty on their water pipes. And many of you want to know do you really need it. Contact 13's Tricia Kean has the answer.
"I received this in the mail and it seemingly regarded, we might be in danger of losing the water pipes that deliver fresh water to our home," says Connie Inman.
She's lived in Las Vegas for nearly 50 years and says she's never worried about her water pipes. But she was bothered by this recent letter from HomeServe USA Repair Management.
"It says here, without this coverage your responsible for the full cost of maintaining and repairing the exterior water service line," says Connie.
As a homeowner, the dollar signs started adding up in her head. According to the company, it offers $6,000 of annual coverage for the cost of emergency repairs and provides 24-hour service from licensed local contractors. But Connie says something concerned her.
"They add in a convenient second page, where you can authorize them to just take money out of your checking account," says Connie.
Action News viewers like Connie reached out to Contact 13 with questions about the company. So we called HomeServe. The company says it wants homeowners to know they're responsible for repairs to their water line stretching from the water meter into the home.
We called the Las Vegas Valley Water District which confirms customers are responsible. And that's where HomeServe says it can help, by covering unexpected costs for an annual fee of about $60. The Water District says it's not affiliated with HomeServe and wants customers to know they're "not obligated or required to purchase the coverage."
And Connie says she wants to make sure people are well informed before signing up. "I think you should be cautious about anything like this that you get and check it out," says Connie.
So here's the Contact 13 bottom line: The company does have an active license with the state and Nevada's Division of Insurance. It's unknown if anyone from Nevada has ever filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. We do know nearly 200 national complaints have been filed with the BBB in the last 3-years. But every one of those cases has been closed and HomeServe still has an A rating.
