Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- All year long, our kids are getting the opportunity to see some incredible theater at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. It's the kind of program that might just make you wish you were a kid again. The student matinee program at the Smith Center makes Las Vegas a better place to live.
The buses pull up and the kids pour out dressed in their best and ready to experience The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. President and CEO Myron Martin says, "It really is what we do what we love and nothing excites us more than seeing those yellow school buses pull up."
Before the show starts, the Smith Center actually sends out curriculum to the schools. The teachers work with the kids so they know what they're about to see and can be a fabulous audience.
This matinee performance is put on by Visible Fictions, a touring company based in Scotland. And the Smith Center and it's generous supporters are footing the bill. For the students this experience is completely free. Martin says, "Many of the students we bring to the Smith Center are coming here for the very first time. We hope they and their families will come back over and over again."
More than 40,000 kids have enjoyed these free matinee performances. The Smith Center works with the school district and private schools to coordinate who is coming to each show. But the goal is that every single student in our valley will eventually get the chance.
