Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- You may now buy tickets for this year's Women's Leadership Conference at the MGM Grand. For years that conference has helped give women a professional edge.
Cyndy Kiser Murphey is the president and COO of New York New York and responsible for every square inch but not too busy to enjoy her employees.
Murphey says, "I enjoy people. And I got to know people at all of our properties and I think that really helped give me some extraordinary opportunities."
When Murphey rose through the MGM corporation, she was blazing a trail for women. When she started in the industry there weren't many in the highest positions.
Today, that's changing in part because of the MGM corporation's commitment to mentoring other women. Part of that initiative includes the 7th annual Women's Leadership Conference, which is sponsored by the MGM Resorts Foundation.
Phyllis James is the Chief Diversity Officer for the MGM corporation. She says, "Despite the fact that women have come a long way, there is still not equality in the number of power positions women hold, or the salary they earn."
The conference is designed to help women learn, network, and position themselves for leadership roles. All women are invited and employers may want to come too. "Because women represent talent. Men are talented too. But if you're not tapping in to the pool of female workers, you're not tapping in to a lot of talent."
It's that talent that's landed Cyndy Kiser Murphey at the top of one of the most dynamic hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. Today, she's overseeing a major renovation that will add a Hershey's store, a park, and transform the front of the New York New York.
