Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- There are thousands of U.S. soldiers who would give anything to be home. So, a local man and a slew of local bands are sending a bit of home to them.
Erik Pehrson is the founder of Songs 4 Soldiers. He asks local bands to donate their music and then ships it off to men and women serving overseas."I've always been passionate about music and always wanted to do something for soldiers so the two ideas came together."
Erik's grandfather served and his brother still does. In honor of them, he decided to send 10 packages last Veterans Day. "I very quickly realized it wasn't going to be a one time thing."
What Erik wasn't expecting was an outpouring of support from local bands and labels like Almost Normal. Andrew Zakher is half of that band. He says, "You know we'd love to go out there and perform for them but not everybody has the resources to do that so this is the next best thing."
Almost Normal even invited concert fans to write thank-you notes to soldiers which will be sent with their CDs. The CD packages have meant so much that soldiers from Kabul, Afghanistan, sent Erik an impressive thank-you gift -- an American flag. "It's such an honor. It is the flag that was flown on the base on the Fourth of July this year. It's incredible. Very humbling. Very humbling. Right now, it's my motivation."
Songs 4 Soldiers is working on non-profit status now and even though our local band scene made the project successful, bands from other states are now contacting Erik to find out how they can help too.
