Shops at Summerlin providing jobs, office space and downtown vibe

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The outdoor shopping center west side residents have been waiting for is finally coming along with 2,000 jobs, stores, restaurants and entertainment venues.

The Shops at Summerlin will open this fall.

Melissa Wood lives in Summerlin. She likes that it's a family place, "We have like 7 parks near our house so that's what I like best."

Is anything missing? "I would like not to go down to the Fashion Show mall all the time."

Melissa perfectly described what so many Summerlin residents think. The parks and trails are world class and now it's time for some world class shopping. And it's coming faster than most people realize. This fall, the Shops at Summerlin will be open for business.

Tom Warden with the Howard Hughes Corporation said, "I think for Vegas in general this is a great message. These kinds of investments by our company and retailers don't happen unless business people understand that Las Vegas truly is coming back. So what you're seeing here is a real endorsement of the Las Vegas recovery with Summerlin leading the way."

This massive project is employing more than 1,000 construction workers and will employ 2,000 people when it opens.

Along with all of the retail stores, a class A office tower with views of Red Rock and the Las Vegas Strip. Warden said they're already getting a lot of interest in the office space, "We've had a tremendous amount of interest in this. Traditionally this market is one that you don't pre-lease but that's not the case here. We're getting a lot of folks who understand what this is."

Just east of the Shops at Summerlin, more than 200 acres still to be developed. The plan for that land is to eventually add high rise condos, apartments and neighborhood shops. A true downtown in Summerlin. Once you live there, you never have to leave.

That sounds good to Melissa, who apart for leaving for college, has lived in Summerlin her whole life, "I'm really excited it's actually starting."
