Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- If you're a senior citizen, every penny counts. Now seniors can get some free help conserving energy in their home and lowering their monthly bills thanks to Southwest Gas and their Seniors Helping Seniors program.
Charlotte Conti is a senior who plans to stay in her home, but would like it to be more affordable, "Hey when you're my age, you want to save as much money as you can."
The problem was, Mrs. Conti didn't know who to call. So when Southwest Gas offered its Seniors Helping Seniors program, she jumped at the help, "It give me comfort because there's a lot of people out there you can't trust."
There are those things that are obvious like drafts coming in from windows but Seniors Helping Seniors can help with areas you hadn't thought about. For example, insulating outlets on those outside facing walls.
Volunteers do the work for free such as replacing seals and faucets which also helps save money. Their goal is simple: Help conserve energy and educate seniors.
Lisa Villaluz is a volunteer with the program, "Everything will be free. No fee. Everyone is always asking if it's free. They are really surprised."
After the inspection, the team leaves behind a wealth of phone numbers and resources seniors may need. Everything from estate planning to emergency services. Far more help than seniors like Charlotte were expecting.
The free program runs from October to May and they'll help about 1,000 people in that time.
