Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The holiday season is here. For most of us that means we'll start gaining 5-10 pounds over the next 7 weeks. But not if Roz Brooks has anything to say about it. She's offering every single person in this valley free help.
On any given day you'll find her in the dirt. Roz Brooks is the founder of our city's first community garden. And since Roz started planting and educating people here at Vegas Roots
, more and more people started coming to her for personal health and fitness advice.
"We've already picked some kale from the garden."
On this day, she's whipping up a chocolate banana kale smoothie, one of her secret weapons for getting enough fruits and vegetables in our diets. "This allows you to get the benefits of kale and we're masking it. Because kale is the healthiest veggie on the planet."
And now Roz is giving all of us an incredible holiday gift. Free training, teaching, encouragement all season long. "Our goal is for you to lose 10 pounds during holiday season. Incorporate 10 fruits and veggies a day and exercise 10 minutes a day."
Roz says the average person gains 5 pounds during the holidays and we never take it off. Ten years later, we wonder how we got 50 pounds overweight. "Most of it comes from the holiday season."
Nine-year-old Adaeja's learning to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Her grandmother is in one of Roz's classes. She says, "So it's a little hard to get used to something that's healthier for you but I think they'll get it at one point."
If we all take the advice of a 9 year old we just might have a happy and healthy holiday season.
Roz's free holiday challenge starts this weekend. She will walk with the group 3 times a week, she'll give healthy recipes and healthy smoothies recipes, and will email you one -- just one -- health habit to incorporate each week. Roz's Chocolate Green Smoothie
1 cup Chocolate Almond Milk
2 leaves Greens (kale is a great suggestion)
2 frozen bananas
2 Tablespoons nut butter
blend, add 1/2cup ice, blend again & enjoy!
