Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- This is national collection week for Operation Christmas Child. All over the world, shoeboxes are being stuffed full of toys and hygiene products and they are sent to kids around the globe in poverty.
Chances are pretty good that many of you watching participate in this effort because our community typically fills 17,000 boxes.
The kids at DJ's Christian Academy are having a box filling party. The kids don't really know exactly which country their box will land in but they do know it will go to a child, many of whom have never received a gift in their life.
Operation Christmas Child is the world's largest Christmas project of its kind. In the past 20 years, more than 100 million kids have received a simple shoe box full of love.
Students at the school are finishing up their boxes this week for national collection week. Then their boxes will be shipped somewhere in the world. Jessica Haughton says, "It's learning at it's best. There is only so much text book learning can do and lecturing can do. But when you're applying those principles it brings it home for the kids. It makes it personal. It makes it real."
