Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Children with autism will be the first campers to enjoy the season at Torino Ranch. Camp season is officially underway at one of Southern Nevada's greatest gems.
Torino Ranch is forty minutes from Vegas but a world away. It's a place where you hear nothing but the sounds of birds and fountains.
What's missing is the sound of laughter but it's coming in just a few minutes.
Kari Tillman is with the Torino Foundation
, which runs and facilitates summer camps for children battling illnesses. "This camp gives them strength, hope."
We've covered the camps like Camp Cartwheel for years. But all of these are possible because of Torino Ranch which fund raises and runs each camp.
There is a long list of people who want to camp here but the season is short and it gets too cold so they can't accommodate everyone. "That's the part that makes me cry. I wish there were four Torino Ranches."
And then just before we leave, the first campers of the season arrive. Children with autism for camp I Am. And another summer season at Torino Ranch is officially underway."
This year several new camps have been added including one for Shade Tree clients, one for blind campers, and a camp to battle obesity.
They need volunteers every weekend! It's a four day commitment but volunteers say you'll get back more than you give. Click here
