White House meeting with congressional leaders postponed

CREATED Oct 14, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) -- There's no deal yet, but the Senate's top two leaders are both voicing optimism that an agreement is near that would head off a U.S. default and end the partial government shutdown.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican leader Mitch McConnell continue to meet, and officials say they are discussing a bill that would raise the government's debt limit until spring.

McConnell also has been speaking with House Speaker John Boehner.

Meanwhile, the White House says a meeting between President Barack Obama and congressional leaders that was set for Monday afternoon has been postponed to give Senate leaders more time to negotiate.

No new meeting time was announced.
