Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A verbal altercation on the roadway ended in the fifth homicide of 2014 in Las Vegas.
On Tuesday at approximately 5:15 p.m., police received reports of possible shots fired near the intersection of South Rainbow Boulevard and West Tropicana Avenue.
Calls then came in of a crash at the same intersection.
Arriving officers discovered a white Buick sedan that had hit two other vehicles and had come to a stop on Tropicana on the sidewalk.
The vehicle had what appeared to be multiple bullet holes in the passenger side, and the male driver had suffered an apparent gunshot wound to his right upper body.
He was transported to UMC Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as 26-year-old Cleottus Harvey of Las Vegas.
Officers also discovered two young children in the back seat, who were not injured.
Family members told Action News Harvey was dropping his kids off to his wife on the way to his second job when the incident happened.
Good Samaritan Desmond Tremay said he was the first person at the scene after the shooting, "I heard children crying in the back so my initial reaction was to run to the back of the vehicle. I asked them if they had any 'owies.' They both said 'no' and the little boy said, 'My daddy has an 'owie.' I reached over to check to see if he had a pulse because I could see that he wasn't breathing through his chest."
An investigation by homicide detectives indicated Harvey's vehicle had been stopped at a red light on Tropicana when a dark-colored compact car, which was reportedly speeding and driving in a reckless manner, pulled up and stopped on the passenger side of the victim's vehicle.
Witnesses reported Harvey and the driver of the sedan engaged in a verbal altercation before the driver of the sedan produced a handgun and fired multiple shots towards the victim's vehicle.
The suspect vehicle then continued through the intersection and fled the scene.
Cousin Anuewy Nurweezy told Action News, "I thought it was a bad dream. I didn't think it would be true. I didn't see it coming. I was just hurt and angry all at the same time. He was my cousin but he was also my best friend. I'm just going to miss him. I'm really going to miss him a lot."
The suspect vehicle could only be described as an unknown make or model, dark-colored compact sedan and the driver as a white male adult. It is unknown at this time if the crime was the result of road rage or was the result of an earlier incident.
Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.
"With the area and traffic cams and all that, they can send you a ticket in the mail for running a red light, but they can't find a guy that shot somebody to death with kids in the vehicle," said Scott Morrows, whose restaurant overlooks the scene.
He's one of many strangers to the family, calling for people to come forward, who could help solve the case, "It's emotional for anybody to hear about it. I hope they find the guy. It's unfortunate that somebody is still out there who killed somebody."
