Unemployment office still working to get system back online
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The transition to a new benefits system has led to major problems at the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Action News has received dozens of phone calls and email messages from residents who are frustrated and angry about not being able to file for their unemployment benefits.
DETR tells us that their online system is still not up and running but they are taking claims over the phone.
DETR says that they were able to take several hundred new claims yesterday and process up to 20,000 weekly claims, mostly through the automated phone system.
The agency says it has nearly 600 phone lines open.
But, people are still having to dial the phone repeatedly for hours before being able to get through.
Carol Lehman is one of those people. She says that she has called the local office dozens of times but can't get through.
DETR says their two call centers received 70,000 telephone hits on Wednesday. Operators at the call centers have been handling double their normal call volume.
There is no word yet when the online system will become available. DETR advises those attempting to file weekly claims to call the automated system during the after hours.
They also say that they will be open on Saturday to take claims from callers. If claimants are unable to reach DETR through its regular numbers, they can also try 775-684-3387 or 702-486-3387.
Their main numbers are 775-684-0350 and 702-486-0350.
