Teenager who survived Blue Diamond pedestrian crash speaks out

By Stacey Gualandi. CREATED Nov 24, 2013

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Jazmin Melgar said she doesn't want people to remember she and her two girlfriends by the accident.

She wants them to remember, "How happy we were together and how we used to laugh about silly stuff."

13-year-old Jazmin is talking about her two best friends. In an instant, they went from typical teens to victims when they were hit crossing Blue Diamond.

Madison is now out of a coma but 14-year-old Helen Liu passed away.

"I miss her laugh. She could just laugh and it would make me happy," said Jazmin.

Jazmin still struggles to walk as she recovers at home. Her eyes are still bloodshot from the crash, and she suffered liver damage.

Jazmin said her liver, "Had been bleeding for a couple of days. I broke three ribs at the top and I had first degree burns all on my side."

On Nov. 9, Jazmin said they were at Helen's for a sleepover when they decided to go to this Kwik-E-Mart. Then Jazmin said they crossed Blue Diamond to go to the Taco Bell for something to eat. That's when the truck hit them.

Jazmin doesn't remember seeing the truck. Now she thinks she survived the accident for a reason.

"I feel like I was meant to do something and I think telling people that street is dangerous and it needs crosswalks and lights," said Jazmin.

She said she's overwhelmed by all the support, and knows while her physical scars will heal, the emotional scars will take longer.

What would Helen want her to do? Jazmin said, "She would want Maddy and me to surpass this and to stay strong and to be happy."

Because of medical costs, lack of insurance and ongoing physical therapy, a fund has been set up to help the families of Helen, Jazmin and Madison.
