Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- High school is hard enough. But experts said 1,100 teenagers enrolled in Clark County high schools have registered as homeless.
Those kids have so much to deal with that finding new clothes for the school year isn't a top priority. But it is for one organization that tries to give support to homeless youth in Clark County.
Project 150 held its first Back-to-School Teen Shopping Day on Friday. It took place at Western High School. Doors were supposed to open at 9 a.m., but the line started forming outside the cafeteria at 7:45 a.m.
Meli Pulido, the executive director of Project 150, said that shows how large the need is in the community. She planned to leave the doors open until 1:00 p.m.
There was a room set up with all sorts of teenage clothing. From T-shirts to cargo pants, to underwear and purses, teenagers were given a bag when they first walked in and were told to take as much as they wanted. All they had to do was show a high school ID to get started.
These was new and gently used clothing. Pulido said they've been donated by members of the community and the organization takes pride in giving away items that teenager want to wear. She points out, these are not items people would want to throw away.
The organization will hold a second Teen Shopping Day on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at University United Methodist Church. It's located at 4412 South Maryland Parkway in Las Vegas. Pulido said because this location is much larger, there should be more of a selection.
Project 150 will continue to collect items of clothing for teenagers with its Back-to-School Drive. That ends on Sept. 9. Up until then, people are encouraged to donate new and gently used items for teenagers at the following drop-off locations:
- Project 150 Volunteer Center: 6211 Dean Martin Drive (M-F 9-1 p.m.)
