Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A tournament featuring some of the best high school basketball teams in the country, including a few from right here in the Las Vegas Valley, starts Wednesday in Las Vegas.
This is the second year for the Tarkanian Classic high school hoops tournament and it's getting a lot of attention.
Las Vegas locals love the tournament not only because it pays tribute to legendary University of Nevada, Las Vegas coach Jerry Tarkanian but because it's also bringing 44 of the country's best teams to Las Vegas.
Several of those teams are nationally ranked.
Last year's tournament champs Mater Dei from Santa Ana, Calif., are back.
And the local team from Bishop Gorman High School is a serious contender and one of the nationally-ranked teams.
Bishop Gorman has been in the spotlight because the teams has a couple of the country's most sought-after recruits.
Henderson-based Findlay Prep, ranked number one in the country in USA Today's pre-season poll, will also be playing in a separate prep school division.
Expectations for this holiday tournament are so high that dozens of colleges are expected to send recruiters.
Tip off is 5 p.m. Wednesday at Bishop Gorman. The Gaels will be taking on Los Angeles' Lynnwood Academy.
The tournament moves to the Orleans Arena on Friday and it wraps up on Sunday.
