Clark County, NV (KTNV) -- A new school year is underway and drivers are being reminded to slow down in school zones.
Police said now is the best time for parents to actually walk across the street with their kids in a crosswalk, to show them how it's done and get them used to doing it so they can be comfortable doing it on their own.
Officers did that with numerous kids Tuesday morning, along with trained crossing guards.
The number one thing they want kids to do is look both ways before crossing, and then stay within the crosswalk.
It may sound obvious, but crossing guards said a lot of kids don't do these things.
Police said even if kids think they know how to use crosswalks, it doesn't hurt for parents to review it again.
"A lot of them, this might be their first time and they might be easily distracted so they should kind of go over those strategies with their children," said Sgt. Dan Clark, Clark County School Police.
Police are also out in force this week, enforcing the school speed zones.
For drivers who get pulled over, it's double the fines.
