Sex offender Jasper Goddard indicted for death of child in 1986

CREATED Dec. 20, 2013

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Jasper Goddard, the man wanted for the sexual assault and murder of a Las Vegas girl in 1986, has been indicted by a grand jury.

The 61-year-old man was arrested June 27 in Missouri. 7-year-old April Marie Rhodes was killed in 1986. Her body was found in a storage locker not far from her home near East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Belmont Street in North Las Vegas.

Rhodes disappeared from her home on Statz Street on Nov. 23 after her family had gone to a drive-in to see a movie.

Her mother went to sleep about 11:30 p.m. and her 10-year-old son and April were in their bedroom, which they shared, at that time.

April was discovered missing the next morning, Nov. 24. Her body was found in the storage locker by the manager of the apartment complex that she lived in.

Evidence was gathered at the time but no one arrested. During a review of cold cases, DNA evidence was entered into the national DNA indexing system in October. It was matched to Goddard and an arrest warrant was issued.

He was arrested during a traffic stop in Ozark, Missouri.

Goddard has been indicted for battery with intent to commit sexual assault, sexual assault with a minor under sixteen years of age, burglary and murder with use of a deadly weapon.

His next court date is Jan. 14, 2014.
