Sandoval creates council to assess base closures
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Gov. Brian Sandoval is creating a military council to make recommendations and position Nevada to fight any possible military installation closures.
Sandoval on Wednesday said the council will put Nevada head of process before recommendations anticipated in 2015 are made by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission, also known as BRAC.
The council will be co-chaired by Kat Miller, director of the Nevada Department of Veterans Services, and Brig. Gen. William Burks of the Nevada National Guard. It will include leaders from Nevada's military communities, retired military personnel and state agency representatives.
Sandoval says the council will make recommendations to his office and the Legislature on how Nevada can avoid base closures and expand its military installations as others around the country are downsized.
