Runners race to sign up for Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

CREATED Nov. 15, 2013

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- More than 30,000 runners from all 50 states and 62 countries are in town for the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon and half marathon on Sunday, and extra security measures are in place to make sure the big event is safe.

The Las Vegas Strip will be shut down so runners can experience the magic of running beneath the neon lights at night.

Organizers said it's become more than a race. They said it's a huge party, with a kick-off concert, a beer garden at the finish line and more spectators lining the sidewalks than runners on the Strip itself.

14 staff members were at the Boston Marathon. Race organizers said they've taken what they learned from the tragedy to protect racers and spectators here.

According to spokesman, Dan Cruz, "We've been in a deep dialogue with Las Vegas law enforcement, Metro Police, Clark County Sheriff's to increase security measures around this year's race."

The Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon was moved up from mid-December to November this year so it wouldn't compete with the National Finals Rodeo.

The race benefits the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America and the local economy.

The race generated more than $180 million in revenue for Southern Nevada last year.
