Reno unveils 4 new electric buses; $500K savings

CREATED Apr 15, 2014

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Transportation officials in Reno have unveiled a new fleet of buses that run solely on electric batteries.

Officials for the Regional Transit Commission say the four new buses are quieter, cleaner and cheaper than their gasoline-powered counterparts. They expect to save up to $500,000 over the life of the vehicles.

Sen. Harry Reid was among those on hand for the unveiling on Monday. He praised the cooperation between various agencies to secure a $4.6 million grant for the buses based on the promise of reducing pollution and improving public transit.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the buses emit zero emissions. They can be fully charged within 10 minutes at a special charging station at the downtown transit center.
